A new series of large-scale reliefs is beginning to take shape in my studio.
The first work, Within, is a triptych composed of three 120 × 120 cm panels, creating a continuous relief 3.6 metres long. The composition develops organically across the three surfaces through openings, cavities, raised forms and flowing lines, gradually transforming the flat panels into a sculptural landscape.
Within is part of my developing series As Above, So Below, in which I explore forms and structures that can be associated both with the microscopic and the vast — with cells, organic tissues, underwater worlds, geological formations or landscapes seen from above. I am interested in this ambiguity of scale: the moment when we are no longer certain whether we are looking inside something or observing it from a great distance.
The work is being built in XPS and is still at an early stage. After the sculptural form is completed, the surface will be hardened, refined and sanded before the final painting process begins.
